I think the water source, a well, was contaminated with benzine or natural gas. Now the city will have to check out the well and deterime where the polutant came from.

I've never heard about such events when water gets mixed with fuel in a well. Fuel pipelines, even defected, must be very close to the well shaft. Isn't it just prohibited? I guess it was some other way.

Paul, that is just awful for such a thing to happen to the water in a well. That's very good that they are looking into doing something about the well. It almost makes me cringe just a little because when I was growing up; my parents had a well and we drank from the well. There were a few times where the water didn't taste too good. There wasn't any fuel or anything like that in the water(at least, I don't think so).We used the water for drinking, cooking, washing dishes and clothes, baths, and pretty much everything else. We didn't have city water at the time. There were of course times when we had very little water to use until it rained.

On Tuesday night news there was a report on a new house because the water was so comtaminated it would catch fire if a lighter was held close to it.

Hell, maybe it was mixed with oil or gas???

The story is that the water well drilled into a pocket of natural gas so, as water is pumped out natural gas goes along with it. Of course they have closed the well and are now doing extensive strata survey by ultrasound.

That is very good Paul that they closed off the well. That is something very serious when you have natural gas mixing in with the water. Are the people that used the well ok? I hope that they didn't get sick from drinking and using the water from the well.

No one got sick from the water as it smelled so bad no one would drink it. A serious problem in California since we haven't had a propper winter in years is that the water table thoughout much of California has dropped and wells are going to have to drilled deeper which cost about $2,000.00 a foot.
The town I live in is going to have to drill 28 new wells and errect a new and lager water storage tank for the expanding population. That's one reason I am in favorite of limited growth. All the new housing developments are required to have "catch basin" in them which translates into parks that are built at least 3 feet below street level.
Many farms have been doing this since the drought of 1977-78 and it has also be instigated in order to catch water run off from field that catch irrigation water and water from stock fields.

I'm very glad to hear that noone was sick from the well water. I know the feeling as well with the proper winters. SC has been going through a drought for at least a couple years and our winters are fairly mild too where we don't get a lot of cold weather. Even though we do get some afternoon thunderstorms that bring some rain through the spring and summer months; it's still not enough to get rid of the drought. Water used to seem like it was so plentiful years ago; but for many years now; it seems like it is not as plentiful. All I know is that I try to do what I can to save water by using it responsibly.

Bottled is preferred, but I am fine with tap..As long as it isnt from a small well..yuk...I cant put my finger on it, but the wells I have encountered always have a VERY odd taste..Sulfer maybe? Everyone tells me I'm just a city girl, and the water is fine...Maybe so, but ,YUK

Bottled water should be ok. Just be careful with the tap water though. If the tap water tastes weird, looks cloudy looking, and smells bad; then be sure to have the water checked to make sure it's safe to drink and cook with.
