People who yearn for old-fashioned public decency might be surprised to talk to historian Angela McShane-Jones at the University of Warwick. In her studies of 17th century ballads - cheaply printed popular songs bought and sold like today's CDs - she found that the accompanying illustrations (below) often contained images of bare-breasted women. The perception of the bosom was quite different at the time, she says:


Ironically, extreme décolleté was the height of fashion in the very middle of Oliver Cromwell's puritanical reign. Bared bosoms continued to cycle in and out of fashion during the 18th and 19th centuries, even amid Victorian prudery.

When in the Louve Museum there are many examples of this type of style. Ruben and many of his contemporaies painted pictures of women with their breasts showing.
I think a great example of this is "Henry the 5th" with Kenneth Brannaguagh and "A Man For All Seasons". These 2 films were more realistic than any others made for that time period.
If it is such an insult to "Puritianical" society, why are push up bras mentioned on TV ads, billboards and magazines? I guess it's better to be seen than heard.
We live in a society of hypocriates and the govt continues to try to regulate our sexual behaviour. Just like your post of the Repub senator getting busted. The old saying: "What's good for the goose, is good for the gander" just doesn't apply to the people in power.

Actually it wasn't until I posted that I noticed the similarity between my avatar photo and the illustration. Its very ironic.

To your point Paul, why is it ok for a man to jog without his shirt, but not ok for a woman to go topless in the same circumstance? We are a screwed up society.

Are the Canadian social laws too strict about this? Or maybe they vary from one province to another, like in the States?...I'm really interested as I know nothing about it.

good point. why is it different if we, female, are top less... Guess something to do with the sexual instinct of men, evolution of people, church, - etc? Good point really.

then again, for the old greeks it was normal to have a young boy as a friend, sometimes - but not a must - also as lover. Older men had younger boys as they admired their youth and therefore beauty of body and mind. The young boy got introduced into the soicety, got knowledge etc.

today, if we would have such relationships we would end up in jail. Why this change?

I don't see anything wrong with baring your breasts in public. Hell, I've seen many women wear such short skirts and very short tops revealing their breasts; might as well be completely nude. I know I would love doing that very much myself! I believe that expression of one's body and desires is great! Kisses to all!

I went to a goth club yesterday, and wow. This girl had a corset on and her breasts were not covered at all, they were hanging over it. However, she had two "Plus" signs with electrical tape covering her nipples. Very legal, VERY hot.

That does sound so very hot! I like corsets too and I think that the tape on the nipples was a very good touch to the outfit as well! Love it!

You've got me. The legislative and police battles over letting a woman breast feed her baby in the US were, totally, stupid. When I see that, I just smile. I mean the Modona is a picture of the same thing so why was it illegal?
No one make a big deal out of seeing two animals mate in the zoo, what's their problem.

Paesties used to be required in Burlesque so what's the problem if a woman want's to go topless or not. It's her business.
Maybe the LE is worried about the number of accidents it would cause.

No it is not. It is encouraged that it be done in a discreet manner, though, such as covering yourself with a blanket for the baby.
In most places it is pretty much just generally accepted and there have been very few complaints and no LE action taken.

I'm glad to read your answer, Paul. At least it means that society has not become completely crazy as it seems to be sometimes :)

My nephew's mom just pulls her breast out and feeds the baby whenerver and where ever he's hungry. It's no big deal in our family and if some one wanted to start a problem over it they'd have to bring in a riot squad.

I really wonder about people who find something scandalous in breast feeding. I think it is just their envy or latent anger.
