As a kid we did air raid drills in school in case the nasty reds dropped the bomb. I'll bet they did the same.
We get commercials about having emergency survival stuff in case of natural disaster, hurricanes, earth quakes, tornados, snow storms..., but today I saw a commercial asking if you have a plan in case of a terrorist attack.
Trust the government to tell the media how to speak. All govt administrations have authorized "leaks" they want info out to the public but they don't want us to think that much about it.
This ad tells me one thing. No matter what the news is reporting about the war in Iraq and this war, that is world wide, things are not getting better.
There is a terrorist alert level that is posted in the US, as sure as I am there are others posted in other countries but, if the govt raises the level and then lower the levels they are afraid of creating a "Cry Wolf" syndrone. No one would take it serious when it is for real.
In this ever changing world of political and global weather changes having an emergency plan is always a good idea. Where do you meet if there is a fire in your house, after you escape? Have a plan. Communications set up. The phones and internet are going to be screwed up. Plan on calling a friend or relative that lives in an area other than the one you live in belileve me the phones will not work in the local area. You may be able to call, out long distance, easier than any other way of contact. Always have some bottled water, it has a shelf life of one year and really, if it gets that bad you can drink the water out of the water tank on the back of a toilet. Make plans accordingly to where you live remember, you may not have a permenant shelter any longer so include tarps, ropes and poles or tents, duct tape. I don't care if all you've ever heard is that you die without water in 3 days the elements will kill you in one. Shelter first, water second, food third.
Have a practical First Aid kit and not one of these pieces of junk they sell pre-packaged. Gauze pads, patches, band aids, news papers and toilet plungers make great splints. Tape, alochol and iodine, soap what ever you can get that will keep a wound clean and from getting infected. Boric Acid and salt are always good to have as well as other spices with socks or cheese cloths you can make a poltice to draw out infection. Mustard works well so does pepper as a poltice. Salt water soaks, although painful are also a good measure. If it's hot you will need salt. It helps to prevent water loss, in the tropics I always carry a bottle, hell I always have a bottle.
Iodine tablets for water purification if you can't boil it, socks for straining. Shovels and tp for sanitation if there's no water in the water lines you can't use the toilet in the house. Waterless disinfectant, baby wips or other items, instant heat and colds, ace bandages and full sized menstural pads. They make a great bandage and if someone is bleeding, seriously, you will need one or more. Saran wrap or plastic wrap, super glue you would be amazed at the medical applications for this stuff if you know how to use it. Butterfly closures and a whole lot of other things that sound rediculous but if it's bad you may need it

100% agree, we got used to rely on government. But in case of real emergency almost no one will care for you. And we 're accustomed to the situation where everything essential for survival is at hand, you can buy anything anytime. Wise have at least some basic backup like minimum food reserve, clothes, medications, and knowledge how to survive.

I want to thank you for welcoming me back. I know I was out of it for a while and appericate all the kind thoughts I have gotten from every one.
If any one has serious questions about survial equiptment and combat field medical training I will be happy to give you all the advise I can.
I was raised, half of my life on a farm that only had electricty so, I know what it takes to survive with out the modern comforts that society takes for granted. I also spent two year in the jungles of Vietnam so I can, deffinetly, tell you how to live without shelter or water or any thing else.
I was a Cub Scout and an Eagle Scout and I do a lot of camping and hunting and out of doors activities. I earned a hell of a lot of merit badges on out of doors activites. I can even build a rope bridge!
I was a member of the National Ski Patrol doing avalanch control so, I know some things about cold weather survival. I was certified as an advance First Aid responder and have worked on search teams as well.
One thing I want you all to know, if you ever get lost in the wilderness do not try to find your way out. Stay where you are, it gives you a better chance of being found. If you move you will end up being more lost than you were. Remember, shelter first, water second, food last.
Survial Man and a whole lot of other survial programs are on the History Channel and the Learning Channel, take some time to watch some of these programs and you will learn a lot of what I know.
Any thing you want to know I will answer to the best of my ability. I have a set of books that are no longer in print because the govt thought it had to much information in it. Like nuclear bomb making and other things the govt doesn't want to us to know like how to make a still, how to make eathonol (?) any a million other things. The series of books is called "How the World Works", it was a Time-Life Series that was publish in the early 80's. If you can find them in a used book store or a garage sale Buy Them!
These books were make famous in a Sci Fi book called "Thor's Hammer". It is a story about how world society is destroyed by a metor impact on the earth and the people who survied were able to rebuild many things that are taken for granted from these books. They're really a little over my head but if you can understand all the stuff you could rebuild a small town.
Like Site Admin says, No one will care for you.
Get a camping stove and fuel for it. If you get a propane stove get a 7 gallon proopane tank and fill it it will last for days. You can use it for cooking, sterlizing warter and tools you will need for medical treatment.
I mentioned Super Glue for medical treatment to close serious wounds but, there is a medical gule called Rigid Clondine that doctors used on me instead of stiches the 14 times my neck and back were operated on. This stuff is so powerful that if you put it on and cover it with butter-fly closures you can bathe while having it on. You can purchase it at a Theatrical Make-up supply store. It is used in movies to make scars, you simpliy apply some to the skin and pinch the skin together and it seals in seconds. It's fantastic but, expensive as well. $30.00 for a little bottle but that bottle will last for years.
Living in Cali and going through all the earth quakes I, also, have two electrical generators. One is powerful enough to produce to supply 2-3 houses or a welder.
Where ever you live, earth quake country, flood country, hurricanes or tornados you need to have the things you need to supply your self with all the services that will be gone after an natural diaster or worse.
Like the Boy Scout motto sates: "Be Prepared!"
