Legalize Prostitution? SHOCKING Poll Results Are In!

Wow, what a ride...

Two weeks ago we took a poll to see exactly how our readers feel about Prostitution.

We asked: "Should We Legalize Prostitution Now?"

The conversation was heated and down right amazing. Readers left many hundreds of comments all over Netscape.com and on the posts themselves.

So just what were the results of this controversial prostitution poll?

More than 2800 of our readers spoke out and the answers will surprise you...

The response to this poll from Netscape.com was so strong that it literally crashed our servers after just a few hours - oops. We've since upgraded our servers to handle the additional traffic that a topic like this can generate. If you did not get to Take the Legalize Prostitution Poll before, do it now so that your voice can be heard! Thank you for your patience as we recovered from these growing pains.

Here's the breakdown as of 5/15/2007
(We'll update the results periodically as the numbers change.)

* 20% of our readers (591 votes) said that it's a Puritanical law that belongs in the 1600's - along with witch burnings.
* 53% of our readers (1525 votes) said that prostitution is here to stay. Let's make it safer by regulating it, like we do other professions.
* 13% of our readers (382 votes) don't like it personally, but said the government has no business in their sex life.
* 11% of our readers (328 votes) are against it for moral / religious reasons, stating it'll be the end of moral values and decency.
* 2% of our readers (63 votes) are concerned it will hurt babies and little kittens everywhere.

What is truly fascinating is that 86% of the people polled supported legalizing prostitution, even though many of they may not personally care for it. Only 13% of our readers were truly against it, most of them citing their personal morality preferences as the reason.

Wow - don't know about you, but we expected the numbers to be a little different ;-).

It's not exactly a close call, more of a landslide really, but it looks like support to Legalize Prostitution is strong!

So this begs the question - how can something that is supported by such an overwhelming majority of our population be illegal? Is there such a strong religious bias and influence in government that the perceived morality of a few is the basis for the laws that govern us all?

This seems to indicate an obvious disconnect between lawmakers and the people they answer to - yes, they do work for us, not the other way around.

The only profession older than prostitution is war. Governments legalize it all the time. Why not prostitution? Simple, although the moral majority of people agree that it should be legalized they will never vote to approve it, it won't look good in the papers.
Alochol causes more deaths than any other thing in the world. Drunk drivings, shootings, and domestic disturbance. The last one is the one call cops hate the most because it is the most dangerous. But, it's legal.

Smoking pot, taking acid, having sex for money will lead you to jail. This is called democracy and free society. The government just keeps everyone out of danger, people are too stupid to make their own choices right.

I agree with some of that. People keep voting for the same elected officials that refuse to look at reality and change the laws to reflect todays society.

I have to voice my agreement with mydearme too..."victimless" crimes are imposed on us mainly to get us use to government control over our lives. Our current anti-smoking campaign is right out of the Nazi playbook (it's true...look it up), and it isn't because the government cares about your health. All of these ordinances against smoking in restaurants is fascism...they are banning a legal activity on private property!!! Don't get me wrong, smoking isn't good for you and it is kinda nice to go restaurants and not smell smoke, but it's the principle!!! Like George Carlin says...sellings legal, and f***ing is legal...why can't you sell f***ing?
Anyway...I'm kinda passionate about freedom, so I'm ranting a little. Just like the plus side of the fascist anti-smoking laws...I can't help but think that as an independent escort I might be better off the way it is...the big corporate prostitution companies will move in...then you'll be able to get a girl at Walmart and I won't be able to compete ;-)

Prostitution is here to stay, and it hurts absolutely no one, it being illegal is the only disadvantage to hobbyist and providers alone. It seems as if law enforcement would have better things to do than interfere in a perfectly harmless crime. Dammit can't we all just get along and fuck (=

Kelli, you need to re-read what dearme wrote. He is in favor of the government controlling our lives, not in favor of free will. He states people are too stupid to make the right choices in their lives and must depend on the government to protect us. This guy is a dictator in his dreams.

Sorry...you're right paulh50...I wasn't reading close enough. At first glance I thought mydearme was being sarcastic...That'll teach me to pay more attention.

You know what the definition of democracy is? two wolves and a sheep voting over what to have for dinner.

PS Shame you're out in Cali...I love outdoor adventure :-)

I was obviously trying to be sarcastic, so you got me right. How can a sane person be fond of the government telling us what to do with our lives?

Hmmmm. You got a point there. While it would be nice to have some safety and some sort of standardization of service and maybe a bit of education for our profession, I hadn't thought of corps taking over.
Yuk.

I agree with the way you think. I see the facisim creeping in as well. Whenever I voice that to family or friends, they think I'm a nutty conspiracy theorist. Ya just gotta look behind the media bull that we're fed to see how prevelent it is.

Leslie
